Dancing Fairy turns umpteen

by wrinkler on December 20, 2011

Yesterday was Dancing Fairy’s nineteenth birthday. The last of the ‘teen’ years.
She came home for winter break on the 8th of December and we’ve been cheek by jowl in the apartment ever since. It’s been interesting, because 1100 SF isn’t that much space, especially when it also includes a very needy vizsla and a cat [...]

Happity birfday, Nurse Tattoo

by wrinkler on November 30, 2011

Today is Nurse Tattoo’s birthday. She is 28. Which is pretty amazing, since I’m not old enough to have a 28 -year-old daughter. I have to start psychotherapy soon to get ready for the fact that she’ll turn 30 in two more years. And, yes, everything is about me.
I start every day by making a [...]

I suck

by wrinkler on August 11, 2011

Because I forgot to post about one of the most wonderful things that happened this spring. Which has been followed by a different wonderful thing.
#1 Nurse Tattoo moved back to Portland. She’s doing her last clinical rotation before graduating from nursing school on the Hill in the pediatric emergency department. This is a BIG deal, [...]

Killjoy

by wrinkler on June 17, 2011

Dancing Fairy took me on a date last night. I love love love it when my children get old enough to take me on dates, rather than the other way around.
She took me to the movie theater where she works. I asked her if she’d be embarrassed to go with her mom. After a pause, [...]

And what a weekend it was…

by wrinkler on June 5, 2011

Oh my. Full of my girls. Both of them, because Nurse Tattoo flew in for the gradimatation ceremonials. That was heavenly. It was also heavenly seeing DF walk down the aisle in her cap and gown… and to hear her say how very ready she is to be done with high school and on to [...]

Pomp and circumstances

by wrinkler on June 3, 2011

It’s here! This is the weekend that Dancing Fairy gradimatates from high school. Oh, the festivities we have planned!
I’m SO proud of her for a zillion reasons. One of the biggest is that, in her final semester, she commuted two hours a day to school, worked 20-25 hours a week, and took two AP classes. [...]

Skool

by wrinkler on April 14, 2011

DF is in the process of choosing a college. It’s been quite a process so far, with applications going hither and thither across the country. She applied to seven schools and got one (heartbreaking) decline from her top pick, two offers to be on a wait list, and four acceptances. How lovely to have four [...]

All my children…

by wrinkler on December 19, 2010

… are now technically adults.
Today was Dancing Fairy’s eighteenth birthday.
Somebody asked me if I was sad. Not a bit of it.
Yes, her growing up means that she’ll be leaving home next year. And that will be another loss. But I am so happy for her that she’s on the cusp of the rest of her [...]

And now…

by wrinkler on August 4, 2010

The wonderful hospital sent my mom back home yesterday. Not home home, because she can’t go back to her apartment by herself. But home to the nursing home part of the retirement community where she lives.
She missed yesterday entirely. She missed everything about it, because she was someplace deep inside. She missed breakfast, lunch, and [...]
