How does this work?

I swear to God I cannot figure out what it keeps track of. I want to think it’s the number of times I refill the Brita pitcher, but I suspect it’s just a really, really slow timer.
The kind of timer I’d need, say, if I were going to run a whole marathon. Or clean out all the closets. Or become a better person. No, wait a minute. I’d need an even slower timer for that one.

Does it keep track of the efficiency of the filter or length of time you have been using that same filter?
I can’t help it; I’m a research geek.
Here’s what the Brita website has to say:
Electronic Filter Change Indicator (Smart Pitchers):
If you’ve purchased one of our Brita® Smart Pitchers, the electronic indicator will tell you when to change your filter. To get the indicator light working, follow these easy steps:
Press firmly and hold start button for 5-10 seconds.
Four bars will appear, one after the other, and flash. Do not release the start button until the 4 bars appear and start to flash.
If you have difficulty pressing the start button, a capped ballpoint pen may be used to press the button down.
A small flashing dot in the lower right corner shows the indicator is working.
When only 1 bar remains make sure you have a new filter on hand.
When all bars have disappeared, an arrow will flash at the top of the display reminding you to change your filter.
Judie — Not sure. When there are no more bars, it’s time to change the filter.
Grace –
Yes, but WHAT is it measuring? The number of refills, the length of time that’s elapsed since I reset the filter, or, as Judie suggests, the efficiency of the filter? That’s the PM.
i think it measures time, and assumes how many times you fill the pitcher. basically, it’s a mechanism to make sure you buy LOTS of new filters. mine quit working (the timer thingy that is) a long time ago. sweet
now i don’t even have to look at it any more.
Carol–I think you got it. It calculates this:
Brita revenue projections divided by number of pitchers sold times (margin on individual filters times number of filters per pitcher per year).
Or something.
What it’s really measuring is my suckerness!
Oh, sorry. Right. Hmmm. Duh.
It measures time. Two months, to be precise.

(Phew. Research geekness level restored. Near miss there!)
Grace — Well, then I’d DEFINITELY need a longer timer to be a better person. Thanks for your research geekitude!
Don’t be silly. You already ARE a better person. There’s no timer needed!
Wow, I am impressed – you guys have a lot of extra time on your hands.
Re: your prostate- Don’t think I’ll go there!
Re: discussion about the machine. I don’t understand a word.
Have a good day,
